David Schmitt (also known as Tuyo) is a Barcelona-based artist who creates almost prehistoric-feeling paintings.

Inspired by outsider art, archaic symbols, and folklore, his work depicts the everyday
experience of being human in his distinctive and joyfully simple style.

Along with his paintings, the artist has created a series of monochrome prints and linocuts featuring funny or poignant slogans, quirky characters, and everyday objects.

“Overwhelmed but managing” reads one print showing a tense-looking chamaeleon. Meanwhile, a determined-looking moka pot stands above the slogan “Great expectations”.

David talks to us about why no art is original, the ironic story behind his nickname and the honesty that can be found in traditional craftsmanship.
