بدأتُ مؤخرًا برنامجًا للدراساتِ العُليا (ماجستير متقدّم: ماجستير في البحث في الفن والتصميم) في Sint-Lucas أنتويرب. تعـاونَت بهية شهاب، ضمنَ عملِهـا في هذه الكليّة، مع روث لوس في فعل "الإبداع المشترك في مجموعة فنانين متعددي اللغات واللهجات"، ولا تزالُ آثارُ هذا المشروعِ موجودةً في المبنى، إذ رُسمت على الحائط، خمسة تشكيـلات مختلفة لكلمة "لا" بالعربية.
I recently started a post-graduate program (Advanced Master: master of Research in Art and Design) in Sint-Lucas Antwerp. In this school Bahia Shehab has been collaborating with Ruth Loos on the act of ‘Co-creation in a multilingual and polyphonic group of artists’, and traces of this project remain present in the building. Five distinct characters (لا in Arabic) are drawn on the wall.
عندما كُلّفت من وَرَق، أردت الرد على عمل بهية شهـاب في مبنى الكليّة، والذي يرتبطُ بمشروعها المتعلق بعبارة "لا ألف مرة".
When I was commissioned by Waraq, I really wanted to react to Bahia’s work in the school building, which is related to her project regarding the Arabic expression “A thousand times no”.
يعالج عملي دائمًا الطرقَ التي يمكنني عبرها تكييف جماليات أو مفاهيم السجّـاد في الأعمال الجديدة التي أنتِجُها، وفي هذا المشروع، أردتُ التركيزَ على "التكرار" الموجود في العبـــارة المذكورة، وكذلك في تصميمات السجاد، وللتأكيدِ على زمانيةِ هذا التكرار، حـاولتُ دمجَ ما لا يقل عن ألف "لا" في هذا العمل، ألف "لا"، تمرُّ بينَ الزخارف، وفوقِهـا وتحتها، لتصبحَ هي الأخرى، زخارفًا بحد ذاتها.
My work always addresses ways in which I can adapt the aesthetics or the idea of a carpet into new works I produce.In this project I wanted to focus on ‘repetition’ that is both present in the Arabic expression and carpet designs. To emphasize this temporality I tried to integrate at least 1000 No's in this commissioned work. Placing them on top, under, and in between the ornaments, no becomes an ornament.

حسين شيخاء فنان تشكيلي ومُصمم جرافيكي من سكانِ أنتويرب، يقوم حاليًّا بتطويرِ بحوثاتٍ اكاديمية تتمحورُ حول أهميّة الجمالِ في الفنون الإسلامية، والزخرفة تحديدًا، ودور الأخيرة المهمّش في قواعد التصميم الحداثية.
Hussein Shikha, is a visual artist and freelance graphic designer who lives and works in Antwerp. He is currently conducting research regarding the importance of beauty in Islamic arts, more specifically focusing on ornamentation and its marginalized function in modernist design principles.
